    Kenya

    Kenya became independent in 1963 after being colonized by Great Britain. The first president was Jomo Kenyatta. The number of Inhabitants are approaching 40 million. Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya where live millions of people.

    masai africaThe number of tribes is 42, the greatest in number are Kikuyu, Luhya, Luo, Kalenjin, Kamba en Masai. The Masai people is all over the region spread as nomads.

    Languages are Kiswahili and also English is spoken; of course the tribes use their own languages.

    The Kenyan Currency is the Kenyan Shilling (the value is 100 Ksh= 0.99 euro and around $ 0.81 - June 2010).

    The climate is tropical, but places like Nairobi until Nyeri are on an altitude of around 2.000 m and the climate is there more moderate.

    Prehistory

    In general it is believed that Kenya (and surrounding) is the base of modern human mankind: the homo erectus. From Kenya the human species spread all over the world. The stone age started 2 million years ago according to the findings. In Olergesaille were hand axes found made 1 million ago - one can visit the place 30 km south of Nairobi.
